In August, 2023, Iowa City launched a pilot program to study the effects of free, safe, and convenient bus transportation in the community. Since the program was launched, transit rides have increased by 45%, compared to the same 8-month period from the year before. This increase in ridership translates to a 250 metric ton reduction in CO2 emissions. This is on top of new electric buses that Iowa City has added to its fleet.
