In December 2024, Iowa Citians Frank and Gigi Durham invited JCED’s home energy coaches to conduct a blower door-and-wick test on their near Eastside house. As expected, they were able to eliminate drafts using materials costing less than $25. They also learned a lot about their old boiler and heating system for future upgrades.
The immediate result of this 30-minute test was pin-pointing leaks and drafts that could then be closed by spraying insulation from the cellar below, applying rubber insulation to the windows, and tightening baseboard gaps.
