JCED Announces New Summer Program, Summer of LEDs

Johnson Clean Energy District is happy to announce a new summer program in partnership with Iowa City Climate action and Hills Bank to provide free LED bulbs to Iowa City residents that need them.

Participants will contact one of our local JCED volunteers to request their 10 free LED lightbulbs by calling, texting or emailing. Lightbulbs will be dropped off at their place of residence by a JCED volunteer. Lightbulb recipients are asked to provide a picture of them with their new LED lightbulbs installed to be entered for a chance to win a new low-flow showerhead. LED lightbulb recipients are asked to provide basic demographic information via survey to ensure JCED resources are distributed equitably per request from our partner institution, the City of Iowa City. JCED’s new summer LED lightbulb program is sponsored by the City of Iowa City and Hill’s Bank.

“We are hoping to accomplish an initiative similar to that of our STEP program that the current COVID-19 pandemic won’t allow us to do,” says JCED Board President, Martha Norbeck. “Our first mission is to provide Johnson County residents with simple energy cost-saving measures to keep money in our communities, boost local economies, and reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. We hope that this program will accomplish this while also keeping Johnson County residents safe.”

The JCED flagship program, STEP, has postponed its launch in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Staff is reassessing protocol and implementation of the program to better reflect the “new normal” and ensure the safety of program participants and JCED team members.
